Pedigree Dogs
Over the years, Pedigree dogs have been admired for their beautiful appearances without any thoughts on why constant health issues that keep cropping up in most kennel club breeds. But not anymore as dog owners everywhere start to investigate into the horrifying tragedy spreading amoungst their pets.
Research indicates that most breeds of pedigree dog suffer from long term illnesses, these are usually brought about through inbreeding (this is where two related animals/humans breed together i.e. mothers and sons, fathers and daughters). Even the geneticist Jeff Sampson claims that…
the restrictive breeding patterns that have been developed as part and parcel of the purebred dog scene have not been without collateral damage to all breeds
But later on when asked to do a film project with BBC 1 called “Pedigree Dogs Exposed” he claims…
the vast majority of dogs we register will live long, happy, and healthy lives
Pedigree has also been linked to the controversial subject of Eugenics (the theory of creating the perfect race of humans/animals through selective breeding, very commonly linked with Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust) because they use a similar form of selective breeding to keep the animals visually appealing, this even involved the killing of several ridgeless ridgeback puppies at one stage. This led to many Rhodesian Ridgebacks to contracting an illness called dermoid sinus which, if it becomes infected, can lead to meningitis and myelitis. The culling of these puppies stopped and animal activists have been on edge ever since, checking up on the performance of the “sick champions” we call purebred puppies.
