Chickens naturally scratch around in the soil to find food. However, in factory farms they cannot do this. To beat boredom they have turned to Cannibalism. To solve this problem, farmers cut their beaks off causing excruciating pain for the animals. (source)
Most factory farmed chickens are kept in sheds containing 20,000 birds in cages that contain 4 or 5 birds, and are stacked up to 6 cages high. Over 2,000,000 of these chickens die in their cages each year due to disease.
